A Shipyard Saved a Substantial Amount of Time and Money Using Vidisco’s Portable Digital Radiography Equipment in Its Inspection Procedure

(PRWEB UK) 17 June 2013

In a recent case study, it was shown that a shipyard successfully increased its production by over 25% using Vidisco’s portable digital radiography systems. There are several factors that can be attributed to the increase in productivity. Vidisco’s X-ray systems have high quality imagers that are extra sensitive; thus they can produce incredible X-ray images with low doses. Using Vidisco’s digital radiography systems also enable the shipyard to work around the clock with less facility shutdowns and smaller area closure.

A video outlining how time and money can be saved using Vidisco’s DR systems was recently released and is available on the new Vidisco website and on its YouTube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/VidiscoXray.

Ships are now made almost exclusively from welded steel. The process of ship building begins with the welding of large plates together into module blocks that are welded to each other to create the ship’s hull. In the ship building industry, quality control (QC) inspectors look for typical welding defects like lack of fusion, cracks, porosity, lack of penetration, slag lines, etc.

In many shipyards, the production process takes place during day, while radiographic testing as part of the QC takes place during night shifts. This can be problematic, as it is not very efficient, especially when trying to increase productivity. The Shipyard used Vidisco’s portable digital radiography systems in order to make the radiography inspection process more effective. The main goal was to keep the shipyard working around the clock in an effort to increase production. As a result of using the portable DR systems, image results were accurate and immediate and area closures decreased. On the spot analysis was available since the images are digital so there is no reason for reshoots which can often involve returning to hard-to-reach places.

The NDT inspectors who have used Vidisco’s DR systems are often enthusiastic, as one explained, in an ASNT group discussion: “The biggest upside for us is the ability to transmit the images immediately to the Engineering Staff to assess corrective action in minutes rather than hours or days.”

Vidisco Ltd. is a leading manufacturer of top-of-the-line portable digital radiography inspection systems. For 25 years, Vidisco has been revolutionizing the radiography industry and continues to do so with leading products like the FlashX Pro and the RayzorX Pro, which is the thinnest imager in the world. Vidisco has an impressive line of truly portable flat panel based digital X-ray systems.

Adar Yiron, Vidisco’s VP Sales and Marketing exclaimed: “It was fascinating for Vidisco to be part of this case study and see firsthand how much time and money using our portable DR systems can save. We would like to extend an invitation to other shipyards around the world who are interested in making their inspection process more effective. Vidisco’s NDT specialists will be more than happy to dedicate their knowledge to helping increase the production process with the use of the right DR system.”
