SOWERBY BRIDGE, United Kingdom (PRWEB) January 19, 2012

It is November 1870 in the small mill town of Fesley, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, when Michael Flynn dies prematurely as a result of working in Palmer’s chemical factory. His young widow, Caroline, is left with only a few shillings to keep herself and her ten-year-old stepson, Danny. Readers can witness how they will brave A Contrary Wind in a riveting historical novel by Mollie Lyons.

Caroline and Danny’s destiny seems to be Fesley Workhouse – a place they both regard with dread, but Tommy Metcalfe intervenes. Tommy is a schoolmate of Danny’s and is a child of Stoops End, the worst slum in town. He and his mother, Elsie, find Caroline a cellar cottage in their street and also a job as general help in The Travellers’ Rest, a pub on the outer perimeter of Stoops End. Here Caroline works hard and long for little money, but she earns the respect of the Adam Cochrane, the landlord, and his mother, Nell.

With Lillian Roth, Adam’s intended, it is a different story. Her jealousy and hatred is turned on Caroline at first sight, and she becomes obsessed with the idea of getting rid of her and her stepson. Her plots and schemes almost destroy the Flynn’s good name and bring near tragedy. Caroline and Danny have their friends, but will they be able to save them from Lillian? The intriguing answer awaits readers in A Contrary Wind.

About the Author

Mollie Lyons has always enjoyed writing, and when she was younger, she wrote short stories for women’s magazines. However, it had always been an ambition of hers to write a novel, but work and family commitments robbed her of the time. Now, living alone and being pretty well housebound, she finally found the opportunity to concentrate on writing again. Though being a native of the north-east of England, Lyons has lived in West Yorkshire for many years and loves the place and its friendly people. In 2008, she moved to Sowerby Bridge to be near her son and his family and fell in love with the surrounding countryside. The author has panoramic views of the Calder and Ryburn valleys, and it is from these, and her love of all things Victorian, that she finds her inspiration. Her writing is directed, mostly, to those who like cosying up in bed or on the sofa and enjoying an easy-to-read story.
