To coincide with Real Nappy Week, the company will be celebrating its achievements since it launched 7 years ago – and highlighting the tangible benefits that it has helped its customers reap.

Each baby is changed 7665 times before potty training, and with a weight of 230g for a used disposable nappy, this waste soon adds up. As a country we’re due to run out of landfill in 2018. Esma Levendoglu, who set up the company with her partner Paul O’Neill when their daughter was born 7 years ago, says “We were not happy to add to this waste. Our quest for a good real nappy led to a decision to quit my job and start our own company promoting cloth nappy use. ”

That company has grown phenomenally through recessions and difficult economic conditions, and Esma believes that one reason for this is the amount of money a parent can save using real nappies – calculated at up to £1200 per child.

The annual awareness-raising Real Nappy Week runs from 15-21 April this year, and Esma says “When we were planning our Real Nappy Week, we decided that instead of just saying, as we usually do, ‘using cloth nappies saves you money and is better for the planet’, we wanted to show that this is true. By using data showing what we’ve sold since we started trading, I can see how many real nappy users we’ve supported to switch from disposables, and from this I can work out how many disposables we have prevented being used. Which comes to a whopping 31 million. And the other great figure is that our customers, using their cloth nappies as recommended, have saved nearly £4.5 million.”

The company is so proud of these achievements that they have widgets on their home page highlighting the two figures, and these link to an area of the site which will be updated on a monthly basis with new figures. They are planning competitions and social media campaigns highlighting the benefits during Real Nappy Week, and plan to offer 20% off everything on their site – helping parents save even more – for the whole of the month of April to coincide with it.

Paul says “The rubbish problem is not going away. We use an area the size of Warwick to dump our waste, and councils are paying ever higher taxes for each ton of rubbish they dump. We are just delighted to be a part of the solution.”

Their achievements look set to continue. Originally run from a small London flat, The Clean Green Nappy Machine set up the country’s first specialist cloth nappy shop, in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, some 4 years ago, and is gaining more and more customers each year. “And we’ll be counting how many nappies each of them keeps out of landfill, and will keep shouting about it!” Esma says.
