SmartDebit advises those who live in rural areas to sign up to Direct Debit following ATM removals

A third of countryside cash machines could be removed following some of the major British banks’ attempt to save money. LINK, who run Britain’s ATM network has calculated that over 4000 machines that have less than 1000 cash withdrawals per month could disappear if other banks follow their larger competitors.

This follows the recent ATM restrictions from RBS and Lloyds bank preventing customers with basic accounts from using cash machines that aren’t owned by their bank. There are concerns that other banks and building societies will also begin to follow this standard.

LINK suggests that one in three cash machines in rural or deprived urban areas are at risk. These areas have already been affected by the closure of numerous bank branches.

A member of the team at SmartDebit shares her thoughts on the subject:

“In light of this recent banking proposal, SmartDebit urges those who live in rural areas to sign up to Direct Debit where possible when paying for goods or services, to counter the reduction in availability of cash. If you live in the countryside, you may begin to find it difficult to withdraw cash to pay for your goods and services. Besides the obvious benefit of not having to find a place to withdraw cash, signing up to pay via Direct Debit for your billing could save you £240 a year.”
