As the weather starts to improve across much of the UK, many bikers will seize the opportunity to dust off their motorbikes and head out onto the road to enjoy the better riding conditions. Tiger.co.uk, a leading motorbike insurance website, is encouraging motorcycle riders out on their bikes during busy periods to be vigilant when riding and make sure they run a few simple checks before setting off.
Tiger.co.uk advises all riders to give their vehicles a thorough once over – particularly if the vehicle has been cooped up in the garage over the winter months and there are some basic checks that can be carried out without having to refer to a professional mechanic.
The bike needs to be given a good visual inspection before the engine is started; the condition of the oil should be checked as should the oil levels, riders also need to look for any potential oil leaks. Riders should also make sure they charge the battery, check the tyre pressure, check the brake fluid, cable lubricant and the coolant level. If the bike has been left resting over the winter it is advisable to drain the fuel tank, give it a clean and re-fill it this will get rid of any air in the tank which may have moisture in it.
Once the rider is happy with these things it should be safe to start up the engine, making sure it is allowed to warm up without excessive revving. When the engine is up and running lights should be checked, including the indicators, and the engine cut-out switch should be checked to ensure it is operational.
