Tiger.co.uk Reveals That Younger Drivers Shun Car Servicing

Regular Car Servicing Is Essential

(PRWEB UK) 22 January 2013

Many younger drivers are failing to keep their vehicles properly serviced and maintained according to a survey of 2,000 motorists conducted by the Society of Motor Manufactures and Traders (SMMT).

The research outlines the potential risks in which some motorists are placing themselves and others on the road, with critical safety factors such as brakes and tyres being left unchecked. The survey revealed that 10% of drivers aged 18-24 admitted that their vehicle is never serviced. Furthermore, 12% of 25-34 year old motorists fail to complete even a basic service or undertake any repair work to their vehicles. In contrast, older motorists seem to be more diligent in maintaining their vehicles with only 5% of 35-54 year old motorists claiming they never service their car and only 2% for motorists over 55.

The SMMT points out that the possible consequences for not adhering to recommended service intervals can be very serious, placing the owners and other road users in an unnecessarily dangerous position. To make matters worse, failure to maintain a vehicle correctly can increase the chance of breakdown and dramatically reduce the general efficiency of the vehicle as it multiplies the effects of everyday wear and tear. These issues could be easily avoided by visiting qualified mechanics at the recommended service intervals that the car manufacturer’s advise. In doing so not only will drivers be safer but they also could avoid higher repair and maintenance costs in the long run.

Possible vehicle software updates was also a part of car maintenance that many motorists were unaware of, with 57% of drivers aged between 18-24 years old being unaware that software upgrades from car manufacturers can improve a vehicle’s efficiency, security and safety.

Paul Everitt, SMMT’s Chief Executive, commented: “A properly maintained car is not only more fuel-efficient, but will be safer and more reliable. Putting off service and repair work is a false economy with risks and costs outweighing short-term gains.”

Andrew Goulborn, Commercial Director at car insurance comparison site Tiger.co.uk, added: “The importance of correctly maintaining a vehicle cannot be underestimated. Not only will this make your vehicle work more efficiently and last longer, but it will also keep you (and others) safer on the roads. The responsibility of motoring does not just mean driving safely but maintaining a vehicle correctly. At Tiger.co.uk we work to provide shoppers with savings by allowing them to compare car insurance. In the long run drivers can also go a long way to saving even more money by keeping up with a vehicle’s recommended service schedule.”
