UK Law Firm Raises Concern over Road Safety as Government Spending on Accident Prevention is Slashed

Following a recent Freedom of Information enquiry by the Institute of Advanced Motorists, it has come to light that government spending on road safety campaigns has been cut by almost 80% over the last 4 years. There is concern by road safety organisations that this will lead to an increase in the number of deaths on UK roads, and that accident prevention campaigns will no longer be run effectively.
With government funding for road safety campaigns being drastically cut in the last 4 years, it is feared that the number of accidents on our roads will increase as a direct result. In 2008/2009 spending on road safety awareness including TV adverts topped £19 million, but with proposed spending of just £3.57 million in 2012/2013, what will this mean for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists?
In the 1960s and 1970s, memorable road safety campaigns by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, such as the Tufty Club and ‘Clunk Click Every Trip’ enjoyed a high success rate in reducing the number of road traffic accidents. Tufty was even brought into the digital age in 2006 when he developed his own website.
Many people still clearly remember campaigns such as these, and there is no doubt that they saved many lives by bringing a constant awareness of accident prevention into the minds of youngsters and adults alike.
Firms that deal with road traffic accidents on a daily basis, such as compensation advice provider the Accident Advice Helpline, have expressed concern that the number of accidents will rise significantly if more money is not spent on accident prevention. A spokesperson from the personal injury claim advice company added,
“Educating our children about road safety is more important now than ever before. The number of vehicles on our roads is increasing every year, and it is vital that children are taught how to safely negotiate journeys on foot or by bike.”
The Institute of Advanced Motorists state that the cost of dealing with a fatal road casualty is around £1.7 million, so will these cuts in spending turn out to be a huge false economy and a tragic mistake?
